Our first two cows have calved today to start off a new calving season. The calves are basking in the sun after nursing on a perfect day for the first week of March. Both calves are progeny of White Gold, a Charolais bull who will have ten more offspring in the next month or so. Both calves are also heifers, which often happens at the beginning of calving season as heifers will typically have a slightly shorter gestation length than bull calves. Heifer calves will also average a few pounds lighter at birth which tends to reduce the likelihood of calving difficulties. As you can see, we are starting to see a little more forage production in our pastures, although we will continue to feed supplemental hay for a good part of March.
The yearlings are in the background of the picture and are doing well. They also are enjoying a little more fresh grass in their diet which is a trend that will continue throughout the month. This is a very nice time of year to come out to the ranch for a visit, especially if you have kids who might want to see some baby calves. Give us a call and we'll make it happen.
