Our calf is now a month old and he has been growing like a weed. In this picture you can see him nursing his mother. Our calves typically weigh between 60 and 90 pounds when born. In the first month of their lives, calves usually double their weight and grow considerably in size. Our last calf was born the final day of April which means our calving season lasted only a month and a half with a live calf from every cow. We only had to assist one cow with calving this year and didn’t have to get any cow up to the corral to help the calf nurse. It definitely was the best calving season we’ve had since we moved to Oregon.
As you can notice from the picture, our pastures are starting to dry out. So I am very happy to report that we had enough irrigation water flowing this morning for me to start up our irrigation pump. All of our fields will get irrigated in this next two-week irrigation cycle. There is no guarantee that our irrigation district will have enough water to make deliveries into September like normal, so I’ll have to be careful to preserve water where I can and manage our pastures properly.
