Our calves have been weaned for over a month and are getting a mix of pasture and high quality mixed grass and legume hay for their diet. My goal is for these calves to gain close to two pounds a day as they go through the late fall and winter. We do still have a decent amount of grass in several of our paddocks and will continue to rotate this group of calves through those paddocks over the winter.
I have sorted Ferdinand off from the rest of the calves, which I needed to do before he reached sexual maturity. The next time he will rejoin the herd will be in June during breeding season. This group of calves is probably the nicest, most uniform group of calves I have ever raised. The light brown heifer calf (#77) in the middle of the picture is a cousin of Ferdinand (their dams are both daughters of Moon). I plan on keeping several of the nicer heifers, including #77, for breeding purposes to add to the cow herd.
