Ferdinand, his mother, and some of the other calves are taking it easy after grazing some lush fall forage. I had to nudge him to get him up for the photo session, which you don't have to do to most calves. I will be very pleased if his calves are as calm as he is. Disposition is a trait that is becoming even more important to me as I get a little slower with time. I don't need the hassle or risk that comes with handling cattle that are wild or spooky.
October is the last month that the calves will be with their mothers and still nursing. I will likely wean the calves that last week of the month when we get a stretch of good days of weather. Since we ran out of irrigation water over two weeks ago and have only had a quarter inch of rain in September, those damp dreary days of late fall look very appealing right now. But because of our rotational grazing system, we still have a nice number of paddocks with a good supply of forage. That is especially important for our yearling cattle that have not yet been harvested. We are over half done with butchering for the season, but still have three harvest days that last into November. We really appreciate our customers who have been helpful with the cattle harvest scheduling and timely with getting their cutting instructions to Jerry's Meats.
